Chelsea's Story

Chelsea was first diagnosed as having retinoblastoma when she was 10 months old. Since then she has been back and forth between her home in North Nottinghamshire and St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London to receive various treatments, whilst also attending the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.

To complicate matters further Chelsea was found to have the rarer form of eye cancer, bi-lateral, which meant she had tumours in both eyes as opposed to the more common problem of just one eye being affected.

Chelsea was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma (Eye Cancer) at the age of 10 months, a rare disease that affects babies and young children. Chelsea suffered the disease in both eyes.

Consultants and Doctors in Nottingham (Q.M.C.) and London (St Bartholomew's) have been fighting to saver her sight for the last 3 years.

Over the years her treatment has included Chemotherapy, laser treatment, Cryotherapy (freezing of the tumors) and the insertion of radioactive plaques in her eyes. In 1999 her left eye had to be removed when the tumors in that eye became large and extensive. In order to save the sight in her left eye Chelsea then needed 20 sessions of External Beam Radiotherapy.

Chelsea is still undergoing treatment in the hope of saving some sight in her right eye. The help and support she has received from those supporting the CBC has made her and her parent's lives just a little easier.
